Lizzie Hexam is one of three main characters in Mike Carey and Peter Gross's Vertigo-published series The Unwritten, which began in 2009.

She didn't start out as a main character - although she has definitely become one - but she was present in the series right from issue #1.

She is awesome because she's the catalyst for a great deal of the action that takes place in the first four issues. She asks thoughtful questions, is resourceful and enigmatic, saves the life of main-character-from-the-start Tom Taylor - the son of a writer (missing when the story starts) who wrote a popular series of novels centered around a boy wizard named Tommy Taylor - at least once, and is generally great. She's also a London-dwelling character from a Dickens novel.

Notes:
- The post might be slightly NSFW due to some of the language in the scans.
- Also, I apologize for the quality of some of the scans which I made myself. I'll get some better-quality ones up as soon as I can. For now I just hope they're legible.

Lizzie is someone who certainly knows how to make an entrance. )

Long story short: Lizzie is a fascinating character. She's important to the story of The Unwritten, and Mike Carey and Peter Gross are clearly willing to spend time and effort on her, which is awesome by itself. I can't wait to get the third trade in January to pick up where I left off!

Cassie stood in front of the wall-length mirror that had been thoughtfully provided. She turned a half-turn, then a complete circle, before speaking.

"You can come in now."

Kate Bishop slid in quietly from where she had been waiting outside.

"Well? What do you think?" she asked.

I...I'm not quite sure what to say. )

Note #2: Here, from the Marvel Wikia, are the images of Cassie's two outfits (and one of Scott's) that I used as references:

Two items of interest.

1) Courtesy of The Source, here's a first look at the variant cover for Batwoman #0, coming out this November. )

2) The Source has also published news about a Commissioner Gordon co-feature in Detective Comics, starting in the November issue (#871). It'll be written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Francesco Francavilla. More info and a bit of teaser art under the cut.

Commissioner Gordon in: Skeleton Cases )

Both of these look really interesting.

This is from Agents of Atlas: Dark Reign #7. In the previous issue, Namora and Namor decide to get married.

But before going through with it, Namora feels she needs to settle something with Jimmy. I like his response because it shows he understands something important ).

Scott Lang was Marvel's second Ant-Man and (by my calculations) the person who had the name and the suit for the longest time. He's someone I'd like to see more of around here*, so to contribute to that and to One Perfect Moment week, here is one of his early adventures.

It's from Marvel Team-Up #103 (March 1981), by David Michelinie (writer), Jerry Bingham (penciler), Mike Esposito (inker), Diana Albers (letterer), and Bob Sharen (colorist). The story is called "The Assassin Academy" and, as the title of the comic and the post indicates, involves him teaming up with Spider-Man.

6 pages and 3 panels from a 22-page story.

* could one of the tag wranglers please add the 'char: ant-man/scott lang' tag to this Heroes for Hire post? It could also do with a 'char: power man/luke cage' tag.

Since [personal profile] northstarfan recently gave us a brief look at what's happening in The Unwritten #12 (and despite the fact that since "unwritten" still describes, for the moment, one of my papers for this semester), I thought I'd do a post about what Mike Carey and Peter Gross have in store for us for next week and the two months after that.

ETA: The images should be displaying correctly now.

For all trade-waiters (and trade collectors!) out there, The Unwritten Vol. 2: Inside Man (which collects issues 6-12) has been solicited for August 11. I'm looking forward to it very, very much. ♥

Some news about what the Young Avengers and New Warriors will be doing during the events of Seige, courtesy marvel.com. Note: Spoilers for the ending of Seige #3 in the article.

In SIEGE: YOUNG AVENGERS #1, writer Sean McKeever and artist Mahmud Asrar stick the teenage heroes right in the thick of things, with a special story that focuses on team members Wiccan and Patriot.
...
McKeever reveals that his one-shot takes place "near the end of SIEGE #3," though he remained mum on the specifics.

Every two months or so, I try to pick up a free French-language magazine called Zoo le mag when I go to one of my comic shops. It has information about BD-related events, interviews, reviews, and some strips.

In the most recent edition, one of the strips was a page from the first album of a new series called Les Amours Compliquées de Roméo & Juliette. It's by Michel Rodrigue and Gilles "Erroc" Corre and published by Bamboo Édition.

The premise (taken and loosely translated from the Bamboo Éditions site linked to above) is the following:

In Verona in the 16th century, Roméo and Juliette love one another...but there are problems including 1) the fact that their balconies are separated by ten metres, 2) Juliette's father, 3) Juliette's nurse (as you will see),
4) two dogs, and 5) Roméo's recurring bad luck.

The objective? For Roméo to reach Juliette's balcony by whatever means possible!

When I saw the page reproduced below, I thought you folks might like it. The scanlation is by me (my first!), with the help of BabelFish, a dictionary, and my own non-native knowledge of French.

The things we do for love... )

Happy Valentine's Day, s_d. ♥
